Recommendations For An Efficient And Maintained Closet Storage Design

Your clothing storage area is a space in your home that you use on a daily basis and several times each day. Here are some ideas to implement into your closet storage and design to make your clothing storage space managed and well-organized.

Plan for Clothing Types

Your closet is going to be filled with all types of clothing, from shirts and pants to socks and underwear. So, be sure you have a storage space that is going to be easy to use with each type of clothing. For example, if you are planning a storage space where you can hang your dress shirts and pants, a closet pole set in the top portion of the space to allow the length of your clothing to hang unwrinkled is going to be an important detail. When you want to store your socks, ties, and underwear, you are going to need drawers that are the right depth to hold a single layer of socks or ties. Make sure to allow enough space to fold or lay flat your underwear.

Then, if you plan to store knitted sweaters, these should not hang on a hanger on a closet pole because it will stretch the knit and put dents in the shoulder areas of the clothing. Instead you will need a shelving area where you can stack your folded sweaters for easy visibility and easy access. You don't want a storage shelf where you will have to stack your sweaters three high because if you try to pull out the bottom sweater, all the sweaters on top of it will come spilling out onto the floor. And you don't want to have to remove the top-set sweaters to get to the one at the bottom of the pile.

Consider Closet Ventilation and Lighting

With your closet storage design, it is important to remember the ventilation in the space. Most closets don't have a window because it would create privacy problems and issues with sunlight facing your clothing. You don't want your neighbor to be able to see right into your closet or dressing area. Be sure your closet is set up with a safe and cool lighting system, such as LED or fluorescent lighting that will give you the visibility you need without adding extra heat or being a fire hazard.

Your closet should also be equipped with a good ventilation system that reduces moisture and keeps the space dry. This reduces the potential for mold growth, especially when your closet remains dark most of the time and the fabrics of your clothing may have a potential to harbor moisture.
