Bathroom Renovations: Changes for People with Limited Mobility

Combining Reverse Osmosis With Your Water Softener

A water softener can make your home's water much more attractive to you and your family by removing many minerals that can give it an unpleasant taste and cause other problems in your home. Combining your water softener with a reverse osmosis unit can make your water even better and eliminate much of the sodium that water softeners add to your water. The combination of these two units offers you a number of benefits.

Hard Water

The minerals in hard water can make it taste funny and contribute to scale buildup in your home. Your hair may develop a straw-like texture, and you may have difficulty working up a good lather in the shower and in your washing machine. Hard water is also hard on your appliances, causing mineral buildup in your water heater and coffee maker. Its negative effect on your plumbing pipes is well documented. If you are a gardener, you may be surprised to learn that hard water works against plant growth. The levels of chlorine can kill the helpful microorganisms in the soil and slow the growth of your plants. High levels of sodium can keep your plant's roots from getting enough moisture.

Soft Water

Investing in a water softener can cure many of the problems that hard water causes. Your water should taste better, and your plumbing will have little or no mineral buil up. A water softener can improve the quality of your life. However, these systems do add  large amounts of sodium to the water which is bad for plant growth. Although the level of sodium in softened water is generally not harmful to you, those on a low sodium diet may want to take steps to avoid extra amounts of this mineral.

Reverse Osmosis

When you add a reverse osmosis unit to your water system, you can remove approximately 98% of the sodium in water as well as other undesirable elements. It can also remove nitrates, lead, and chlorine. Since the water will be low in sodium and chlorine, your plants should thrive as well. You will actually save money by installing one of these units because you can forgo buying distilled or other bottled water.

For the best quality water, consider installing a water softener and a reverse osmosis unit. You will get all the advantages of soft water without the additional sodium. Your water will taste great and clean better. Your garden will also thrive when you make this change.
