Bathroom Renovations: Changes for People with Limited Mobility

3 Advantages Of Using Rain Chains

Downspouts are by far the most common method for redirecting rainwater away from your home's foundation. However, rain chains are a viable alternative that eliminate some of the common nuisances associated with downspouts. Here are three advantages of replacing your gutter downspouts with rain chains.

Clog-Free

Dirt, leaves, and other debris can easily clog gutter downspouts over time. This will prevent the downspouts from doing their job correctly, causing water to spill over the edges of your gutters. If this problem is left unchecked, the soil around your foundation can become saturated and place pressure on your foundation that could lead to leaks and cracks in your basement walls.

Unlike downspouts, rain chains do not suffer from problems with clogging. Dirt and leaves that fall through your gutters onto your rain chains will simply slide off of the chains as water rushes over them. This greatly reduces the chances that your foundation will become damaged from water buildup in the soil.

Pleasant Sound

If you have ever had a downspout that was installed close to a bedroom or home office window, you know that the sounds they make can sometimes be annoying. If the dripping, hollow sounds of downspouts are keeping you up at night, replacing them with rain chains is a great way to eliminate this problem.

For many people, a large part of the appeal of rain chains is the relaxing sounds that they make. The sound that your rain chains make will vary depending on the style that you install. Standard chains will make a quiet rushing sound, somewhat like to the noise of a slow stream. Some rain chains have cups installed along the chain to funnel the water and also create a sound that is similar to a small waterfall. Others have bells or chimes that sound as water flows over them.

Low Maintenance Requirements

Even the most well-made gutters are likely to develop leaks along seams or joints over time. Rain chains will not develop leaks and are also more resistant to general wear than downspouts. Rain chains are typically made from bronze or copper, which will develop a patina over time that enhances their appearance. This is unlike galvanized steel downspouts, which will rust, and vinyl gutters, which can crack from ice buildup and sun exposure.

Rain chains are a unique alternative to downspouts that improve on many problems with downspouts while also enhancing the aesthetics of your home's exterior.
