How To Care For Solid Surface Counters

If you have chosen to purchase a solid surface counter, you want to be certain that it lasts as long as possible. One way to do this is to make sure that you maintain your solid surface counters regularly. Here are some tips to get the job done.

1. Disinfect Once or Twice a Week

Your first step is to disinfect the counters once or twice a week. This will allow you to make sure that you can set things down on them without having to worry about germs. However, you don't want to use store-purchased cleaners because these may be too harsh for your solid surface counters and cause damage. Instead, take a spray bottle and fill it halfway with water. Then, fill the rest of the bottle up with bleach. Take the diluted bleach solution and spray down the counter. Do not allow the solution to sit. Immediately use a wet cloth or paper towel to remove the bleach solution. The disinfecting properties will take effect almost immediately.

2. Use Pads When Storing Hot Things on the Counter

Although solid surface counters are relatively resistant, it's not safe to put hot pots and pans directly on top of the counters. You need to make sure that you put at least a towel down to help protect the counters from the effects of the heat. This will help you avoid heat staining the counters.

3. Use Warm Soapy Water for Regular Cleaning

Use a mild detergent mixed with warm water to clean your counters on a daily basis. You want to be sure that you remove any last vestiges of soap in order to make sure that scum doesn't form. Use a soft rag to apply the soapy water to the counter in order to make sure that you don't inadvertently scratch the counter.

4. Use Solid Surface Cleaner Once a Month to Shine the Counter

Finally, be sure that you use solid surface cleaner once a month to get rid of any built-up residue that might have formed on your counter over time. This residue is going to make your counter look dull. The cleaner will allow you to remove that residue and polish the counter a little bit so that it is restored to the glory that it had when it was first installed.
