DIY Appliance Repair: How To Insulate Gaps Around Window Air Conditioner

For those without central air conditioners, window units can be a major help when the summer months kick in. But window units pose one major problem: they usually leave gaps around the edges, due to imperfect fits, that can still let heat inside. Solve this problem with an afternoon of work that will only require a few materials. Remember, this is to help out an air conditioner that's working properly and doesn't replace having an appliance repair person look at a faulty unit.

Things You Need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pen
  • Sharp knife
  • Polyurethane rigid blocks
  • Insulating foam

Step 1: Measure the Space

Measure the gaps that surround your air conditioner while the unit is in its usual position in the window. Take your time and ensure that you have the exact height and width for each gap. Write the measurements down on a piece of paper if you don't have a good memory so that you can ensure you have the numbers right.

Step 2: Cut the Blocks

Use the measuring tape to find out the size of your polyurethane blocks. Don't go by the package dimensions, as these can sometimes be wrong. Use the measuring tape and a pen to mark any areas that will need to be cut off in order for the block to fit snugly into one of the openings. Note that it might be necessary to put more than one block into each opening, in which case each block should fit snugly together.

Carefully cut the excess pieces off the blocks using a sharp knife. Place the pieces off to the side in case you need filler when you go to place the blocks.

Step 3: Place the Blocks

Fit the blocks into the gaps, taking your time to make sure each block fits snugly into the hole. You might need to make some additional cuts or use small pieces of scrap as filler. The blocks aren't the final step in this process, so it doesn't have to be exact down to the centimeter, but do the best job that you can to make insulating easier.

Step 4: Spray Insulating Foam

Read the package directions on the insulating foam. Apply the foam onto the blocks around the air conditioner. You can do this on the inside or outside of the window but outside lessens the chance of expanding foam ending up all over your home.

If heat still seems to be coming from the air conditioner, it might be a problem with the unit itself. Call an air conditioner repair person for assistance or a company like Master Tech Mechanical.
