Remodeling Your Kitchen? Flooring And Kitchen Cabinets

If you are remodeling your kitchen, you are likely installing new cabinets and flooring. Below is some information about each of these to help you make the best choice.

Vinyl Flooring

There are so many flooring options to choose from that it makes it difficult to decide what you want. Much of this also depends on your budget.

Vinyl sheet flooring is inexpensive, and it is easy to care for.  Vinyl sheet flooring comes in rolls that are simply rolled onto your floor.

You can also purchase vinyl tiles. This type of flooring is usually less expensive than the sheet vinyl. It takes longer to install, however, because you have to lay each individual tile one at a time. Either they are glued onto the floor, or you can nail them to a sub floor.

If you would like wood floors but do not want the expense, you can choose vinyl floor planks. These planks are designed so that they look like wood. The planks are sized and shaped like real wood planks. These planks are either glued in, or they have a sticky back surface that are simply stuck onto the floor. Kitchen Cabinets Wood Types

If you would like wood cabinets, the first thing you should consider is the grain.  Because these cabinets are made from trees, none of them will look the same.

There may be small marks on the cabinets due to birds pecking on the tree, and sugar tracks can cause light to a dark brown color throughout the cabinets. Trees have different sized knots, and you will even find wormholes. All of these things have an effect on what the wood looks like. Some wood types you will find when looking at cabinets include:

  • If you would like a rustic look in your kitchen, alder wood is a good choice. Due to sugar tracks, the color of this wood is typically a reddish brown, and it is a soft wood.
  • Cherry wood cabinets will darken over time going from a tan color to a dark brown. You will often see sugar tracks on this wood.
  • Maple cabinets look good in almost any type of kitchen décor, and you can find it in a pale white to a pale brown with different grain patterns. With cherry, you will often see bird pecks, as well as sugar tracks.
  • Oak cabinets have an open grain, and can be a light wood color to a dark brown. You may see wormholes in this wood, as well as different sized knots. Oak is very durable, and looks well in rustic or causal kitchens.

If you do not feel comfortable installing your own flooring or cabinets, you should let an experienced contractor do it for you. It is important that you get them right the first time.
